#RocketBlastFromThePast: Health Science Campus

People often say you can’t know your future without knowing your past. And the same can be said for the future of an academic institution continuing to shape future generations. But, as students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University of Toledo, how well do we know its history? This series, entitled #RocketBlastFromThePast, was started by Juice House as a social media series to discover our shared legacy as Toledo Rockets by diving into the digital archives of the Canaday Center and sharing interesting tidbits and fun facts of UToledo’s rich history that encourages a sense of pride in our institution. Now brought to you as a collection, it’s more than a trip down memory lane; it’s an exploration and transportation from the past to the present, with a vision and inspiration guiding us into a bright future and beyond.

Recognize this building? You will if you take classes on UToledo’s Health Science Campus! This week’s #rocketblastfromthepast 🚀 revisits the history of this campus’s beginning with the construction of its first buildings.

In 1973, the first building on the HSC was completed: the Health Sciences Building. When it opened, the departments of anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology could be found here.

While the Health Education Building wasn’t completed until 1975, it became the largest building on the HSC. It was designed with two lecture halls that could hold 250 students each, two seminar rooms that could each hold 100 students, as well as eight conference and laboratory facilities. It also housed the Animal Research Facility and the Cancer Center, setting the stage for the role it would play as a major medical center educating the doctors, nurses, pharmacists and researchers of the future.
