According to a recent study by Clinical Nutrition, 92% of U.S. college students surveyed consumed any form of caffeine in the past year, with coffee being the most likely beverage of choice. So, where’s the best place to get coffee in Toledo? The JuicePress surveyed coffee shops near campus to find out.
From on-campus locations like Frogtown Cafe to nearby coffee shops like BREW Coffee Bar, we selected 11 coffee shops to survey, using criteria such as price, distance from campus and hours of operation to compare each location. While there are a few cafes on campus, we opted to explore options off campus and avoid large retail coffee shops in favor of locally-owned joints.
Most Toledo coffee shops lie to the east of campus in downtown Toledo. A few sit in the suburbs to the northeast of campus, and one is located directly on campus.
We measured the distance of each coffee shop from UToledo’s main campus in minutes of driving time. Only two coffee shops, BREW Coffee Bar and SIP Coffee, had a driving time of under five minutes, sitting at three minutes and five minutes, respectively. The other nine coffee shops ranged from eight minutes to 14 minutes in driving time. If you’re without a car on campus, BREW Coffee Bar and SIP Coffee are also walkable at 17 and 35 minutes, respectively.
Another important factor we looked at is the hours of operation for each coffee shop. No two coffee shops had the same operating hours. With SIP Coffee open as early as 6:30 a.m. and Brew House Downtown open all the way until midnight on some days, whatever time of day you find yourself craving some caffeine, there’s bound to be at least one cafe open.
Mocha House Cafe was open for the broadest hours of operation at 96 total hours per week, and Jamii Cafe had the fewest at 41 total hours per week.
Each coffee shop also holds a wide assortment of drink options. At most shops, hot and iced coffee were the most prevalent menu items, with hot coffee taking up the most space on the menu. Other common offerings include hot chocolate, fruity drinks and other bottled beverages.
Mocha House Cafe had the largest menu by far at 78 total drinks, followed by House of Coffee with 74 drinks and BREW Coffee Bar with 73 drinks. Jamii Cafe had the fewest drinks at 13. But remember — quantity doesn’t always mean quality!
Last but certainly not least are the prices. We recorded the prices of three popular drinks to find the best deal in town: the cappuccino, latte and drip coffee. Prices were taken as of July 2026 for cups sized “small” or equivalent at each location, with 12 ounces being the most common size and some locations not listing the size on their menus at all.
Maddie & Bella Coffee Roasters had the most inexpensive cappuccino at $4.00, whereas Brew House Downtown had the most expensive at $5.75. For lattes, SIP Coffee had the most inexpensive option at $4.45 and BREW Coffee Bar had the most expensive at $6.05. Drip coffee was the least expensive at Maddie & Bella at $1.75, while Earth Coffeehouse had the most expensive at $3.75.
