Spooky Fest was an event held by the Society of Environmental Advocates from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 under the Student Union Pavilion to provide seasonal, environmentally friendly activities and give a platform to local and campus groups.
SEA President Joslyne Nelson described the event as a self-serve way to de-stress after midterms and before finals, while also “…bringing awareness to sustainability and environment,” she said.
Activities at the event included pumpkin painting and carving, decorating tote bags or bookmarks, origami, making paper-mache mason jars, henna tattoos and jewelry making. Upon registering, students received tickets they could turn in for free food at the provided food trucks, Susie Lynne’s Lemonade and Detroit Mini Donut. SEA had a return station for used lemonade cups so they did not have to be thrown away. There was also a chance to win a free basket with sustainable and outdoor-related prizes.
Pumpkin carving contests were held at noon and 1 p.m. There was a table of free potted plants provided by the Student Green Fund, and SEA volunteers advised guests on the specific plant species’ care needs. The Society of Physics Students also tabled at Spooky Fest.
