Nationwide, international students made up 6% of the higher education population during the 2024-2025 academic year according to the Open Doors 2025 Report on International Educational Exchange. At the University of Toledo, where the international student body comprises 8% of its total enrollment based on fall 2026 counts, international students have become an important part of the university community.
With a diverse international community bringing students from many different countries and cultures to campus, The JuicePress examined a decade of international student enrollment trends to explore their contribution to UToledo’s cultural fabric.
Total International Undergraduate and Graduate Student Enrollment
Looking at international student enrollment from 2017 to 2026, the number of international students at UToledo has been on a downward trend. In 2017, UToledo welcomed 1,004 international undergraduate students. However, in 2026, the number of international undergraduate students dropped to 682.
UToledo enrolled 851 international graduate students in 2017, and remained relatively stable for the next several years until it began to decline in 2020. In 2026, enrollment fell to 493 international graduate students, a 42% decline since 2017.
While the number of international students at UToledo has decreased, the proportion they comprise among the total student body has, however, stayed relatively the same. International students consistently made up 16% to 20% of graduate enrollment between 2017 and 2026, and 5% to 8% of undergraduate enrollment during the same period. Both groups saw a slight decrease in their percentages from 2020-2021, overlapping with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the years since, undergraduate international enrollment rebounded and has even slightly increased, meanwhile graduate international enrollment has mostly continued its downward trend.
Despite these changes, UToledo continues to have a large and diverse international student population. According to university admissions, international students at UToledo come from 77 countries. According to spring 2025 data, top countries represented at UToledo include India, Nepal, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Iran, China, Canada, Ghana and South Korea.

Their presence extends beyond enrollment numbers, contributing to the cultural diversity of campus and remaining an important part of the university’s global identity.
